AFC Heritage Trust Armistace Day Event

Last updated : 08 November 2011 By Stand Free Ed

This will be the third year that the Trust has recognised the sacrifice made by players and staff in World War I and World War II. The ceremony has become a permanent and important fixture on the Trust calendar.

This year the Heritage Trust will be unveiling a new name on the Trust Memorial: Jack Campbell, a former Dons reserve player who, as a Flying Officer in the RAF, lost his life near the Andaman Islands in 1943 while on a reconnaissance mission.

The Trust will also have as guests two members of the Sutherland family from Belgium, George and Alex Sutherland, who along with George's father the late Walter Sutherland have given 125 years of service to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Walter Sutherland was almost certainly involved in the burial of Capt Joseph Ellis Milne DSO, (RAMC), the AFC Club Doctor, who was killed in 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, near Poperinge, where both Walter and his son George worked for many years.

Anyone who would like to attend will be very welcome. The ceremony will commence at 10.45am with doors open at 10.30am. Please enter by Gate 13 of the RDS.
