Third Place -The Facts

Last updated : 04 May 2008 By Stand Free Ed

The combination of results needed for us to qualify for Europe is getting simpler by the week. Here are the remaining fixtures involving SPL Top 6 teams:

Wednesday, 07 May 2008
SPL Rangers v Motherwell, 19:45

Saturday, 10 May 2008
SPL Motherwell v Aberdeen, 15:00
SPL Rangers v Dundee Utd, 12:30

Sunday, 11 May 2008
SPL Celtic v Hibernian, 12:30

Wednesday, 14 May 2008
UEFA Zenit St Petersburg v Rangers, 19:45

Saturday, 17 May 2008
SPL Motherwell v Rangers, 12:30

Monday, 19 May 2008
SPL St Mirren v Rangers, 19:45

Thursday, 22 May 2008
SPL Aberdeen v Rangers, 19:45
SPL Dundee Utd v Celtic, 19:45
SPL Hibernian v Motherwell, 19:45

Saturday, 24 May 2008
SC Queen of South v Rangers, 15:00

Here is the current SPL table:

Pos Team Pld GD Pts
1 Celtic 36 +55 83
2 Rangers 33 +47 76
3 Motherwell 34 +2 53
4 Dundee Utd 36 +9 52
5 Hibernian 36 +8 52
6 Aberdeen 36 -9 50

So what we need is as simple as this:

- Rangers must either beat or draw with Motherwell home and away - very possible.

- The OF must win or draw their remaining games with Dundee Utd and Hibs - highly likely

- Aberdeen must win at Fir Park and at home to Rangers - tricky.

- Hibs must either beat or draw with** Motherwell at home - by no means unlikely.

**If Motherwell draw both games with Rangers, then we need Hibs to beat Motherwell.

We got an unlikely set of results this season to qualify from the UEFA Cup group stages (remember that?) and to get into the Top 6, so it is possible.

There will be those, including some Dons fans, who will be bumping their gums about us "relying on other teams' results". Well I've got news for those fowk. That's how league football works, guys. If we win our last two games but other results conspire to leave us short of third place, then so be it.

However, while it is still possible for us to qualify for the UEFA Cup next season, there is no point in denying that fact and we should all get behind the team.

We've already let one Scottish team with no recent Euro experience take their place in the UEFA Cup next season, let's not let another - for the good of Scottish football.

Believe.
