CaddyCarhandle takes a trip down memory lane to look at previous encounters with Celtic in the Scottish Cup.
ABERDEEN take on Celtic on Sunday afternoon in a game that is crucial to keep the Dons' season alive.
As CaddyCarhandle was idly flicking through the annals of history (as he does), he was astonished to find that the two teams have played each other before in the same competition.
A lot.
Upon making this amazing discovery, he soaked up the highlights, facts, stats, snapshots and stuff from the last thirty years of Red-Hoop confrontations and has regurgitated them to you in human/screen interface form now...below.
1978/79
Scottish Cup Quarter Final

Celtic won 1-0 in the league the previous week. Edvaldsson's header fell to Doyle to net from close in. Within seconds Kennedy despatched the ball into Harper's path, and King Joey volleyed an unforgettable goal past the advancing Latchford. Five players were booked in this tough affair.

Aberdeen 2 (Davidson 2, Archibald 13)

Harper guides the ball into the path of Davidson for the first goal. Archibald pops the ball over the stranded Latchford for the second. Lennox was played onside by a ricochet between Rougvie and Miller. Missiles later rained down from the terraces. Argy-bargy in the players' tunnel.
1981/82
Scottish Cup Fourth Round
13 Feb 1982
Aberdeen 1 (Hewitt 19)
Celtic 0
ABERDEEN: Leighton, Kennedy, Rougvie, McMaster, McLeish, Miller, Strachan, Simpson (Bell), McGhee, Hewitt, Weir
Celtic: Bonner, McGrain, Reid, Aitken, McAdam, MacLeod, Sullivan (Halpin), McStay, McGarvey, Burns, McCluskey

Celtic have won both their league games at Pittodrie this season. Fergie springs a surprise by moving McLeish into midfield, Rougvie moving to centre-back with McMaster at left-back. Bonner comes to Celtic's rescue with a spectacular save from a Hewitt header, but Hewitt was not to be denied from the resultant corner as he brilliantly hooks home. The closing stages are played out in frantic fashion, but no further goals mean the Dons progress to the Quarter Finals.

1982/83
Scottish Cup Semi Final
16 Apr 1983
Aberdeen 1 (Weir 65)
Celtic 0
ABERDEEN: Leighton, Kennedy, Rougvie, Cooper (Weir), McLeish, Miller, Strachan, Simpson, McGhee, Bell, Black (Watson)
Celtic: Bonner, Sinclair, Reid, Aitken, McAdam, MacLeod, Provan, McStay, McCluskey (Crainie), Burns, McGarvey
Ref: A Ferguson
Att: 51,152 (Hampden Park)
The big games are coming thick and fast for the Dons, only 10 days earlier saw Waterschei thumped 5-1 at Pittodrie. This match has none of the flair displayed in that game, neither side makes an attempt to play football. Cooper sustains a broken nose as he clashes with Aitken (still can't believe he went on to manage us). Cooper's replacement - Peter Weir - ghosts in at the back post to head past Bonner, and sends the Dons back to Hampden once more.

1983/84
Scottish Cup Final
19 May 1984
Aberdeen 2 (Black 23, McGhee 98)
Celtic 1 (McStay P 86)
[after extra-time]
ABERDEEN: Leighton, McKimmie, Rougvie (Stark), Cooper, McLeish, Miller, Strachan, Simpson, McGhee, Black, Weir (Bell)
Celtic: Bonner, McGrain, Reid (Melrose), Aitken, McStay W, MacLeod, Provan, McStay P, McGarvey, Burns, McClair (Sinclair)
Ref: R. Valentine
Att: 58,900 (Hampden Park)
Aberdeen are playing their 63rd match of the season - a club record. Black hooks home midway through the first-half. Then the Aitken red-mist descends as he floors McGhee, becoming the first player to be sent off in a Scottish Cup Final since 1929 (still can't believe he went on to manage us). With only five minutes to go, Paul McStay fires home to send the match into extra-time. Substitute Dougie Bell's uncorked a peach from thirty yards which flew off the junction of post and bar. Strachan squared across goal and McGhee squeezed the ball in from a tight angle. This time Celtic's tank was empty.

Celtic: Bonner, McGrain, Rogan, Aitken, Whyte, Grant, McClair, McStay P, Johnston, MacLeod, McInally

Att: 23,000
Live Sunday TV on an unplayable skating-rink pitch. Leighton slips and McInally heads the opener off the bar. David Robertson fouls McStay for the penalty. At half-time, Ferguson sounds the Govan bugle and throws on Hewitt. McGrain bundles over Wright and Bett pulls one back. Hewitt rounds Bonner to make it 2-2. Aberdeen so nearly win after that.

The kick-off was delayed seven minutes to let in the huge crowd. The replay was as anticlimactic as the original was frenetic; both sides feared the consequences of elimination. Afterwards, neither side agreed to toss a coin to decide the next venue, so it will be played on neutral ground.

ABERDEEN: Leighton, McKimmie, Robertson D, Grant, McLeish, Miller W, Miller J (Weir) , Bett, Dodds, Wright, Connor (Hewitt)

Hours of ceaseless rain turned Dens Park into a quagmire. For the third time both sides keep an unchanged line-up. Brian McClair's goal ends Ian Porterfield's 17-game unbeaten run. John Hewitt has made a written transfer request, Brian Mitchell is set to sign for Bradford City, and the natives are restless.
1989/90
Scottish Cup Final

[after extra-time]
(Aberdeen win 9-8 by the medium of kicks from the penalty mark)
ABERDEEN: Snelders, McKimmie, Robertson D, Grant, McLeish, Irvine, Nicholas, Bett, Mason (Graham Watson), Connor, Gillhaus
Celtic: Bonner, Wdowczyk, Rogan, Grant, Elliott, Whyte, Stark (Galloway), McStay, Dziekanowski, Walker (Coyne), Miller
Ref: G Smith
Att: 60,493 (Hampden Park)
Miller has played the last two league games, but to his disappointment he finds that he doesn't even make the bench for the final. His refusal to take part in the victory parade will cost him a fine from Ian Donald. The final itself is a drab affair, and for the first time it goes to penalties. Grant missed for Aberdeen, Wdowczyk for Celtic. Nicholas had already agreed to rejoin Celtic, but to his credit he does his job from the spot. Anton Rogan and Brian Irvine were the last outfield players left. Rogan hit his kick low and to the corner, but the outstretched left hand of Snelders turned it round the post. So to Irvine, and the big man called on the strength of his Christian faith to fire past Bonner.

2001/2002
Scottish Cup Fourth Round
25 Feb 2002
Aberdeen 0
Celtic 2 (Hartson 6, Petrov 53)
ABERDEEN: Kjaer, McNaughton, McAllister, Bisconti, Whyte, McGuire, Derek Young (Zerouali) , Darren Young, Dadi, Mackie, Winters
Celtic: Douglas, Agathe, Thompson, Balde, Sutton (Crainey), Mjallby, Petrov, Lennon, Hartson, Lambert, Moravcik (Maloney)
Ref: H. Dallas
Att: 17,082
The match build up is surrounded in controversy as it is switched to Monday night from the usual Saturday evening live-game slot. This followed the crowd trouble which blighted the recent visit of Rangers. Goals from Hartson and Stilian Petrov early in each half ensured that Martin O'Neill's side gained revenge for their December's defeat in the snowballs encounter, a defeat which proved to be their only league defeat of the season. With the end of the game in sight, John Hartson kicks out at Jamie McAllister and is sent off.
