AFC Close To Announcement

ABERDEEN aim to conclude a deal for Craig Brown to become their new boss on Friday following the veteran manager's resignation from Motherwell.

Brown is talking with the Dons board after telling them over the phone on Thursday he wanted to take over at Pittodrie.

Motherwell were left bewildered by the 70-year-old's resignation, which came in tandem with that of his assistant Archie Knox.

Reports claim Motherwell will ask Aberdeen to delay the appointment of the pair until after the teams meet at Pittodrie a week on Saturday but it is understood the Dons will reject any such proposal.

Caretaker managers Neil Cooper and Neil Simpson are likely to take a proactive role in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash against Hearts at Tynecastle but Brown and Knox are almost certain to be involved.

A statement on Aberdeen's official website read: "The club hopes to be in a position to make an announcement regarding the position of the football management team at some point later."
