Dons Meet With Mandela

ABERDEEN have been granted a private audience with former South Africa president Nelson Mandela as he celebrates his 88th birthday today.

The Dons will take time out of their tour of the country to meet with Mr. Mandela at his Johannesburg home.

Mr. Mandela spent a quarter of a century in prison for plotting to overthrow the apartheit National Party government with violence.

He became South Africa's first black President in the country's first fully democratic elections 1994.

These days he is more famous for meeting people, including David Beckham and the Spice Girls...and now the Dons.

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood told the Aberdeen Evening Express: "Everyone is very excited.

"It is not every day you get the chance to meet someone as special as Mr Mandela."

Meanwhile, Dons winger Jamie Smith thinks the Dons can 'do a Hearts' this season and challenge the Old Firm.

Smith, the Dons' top scorer in his first season with the club, continued the positive talk from the Dons players in the build-up to the new season, echoing captain Russell Anderson's words last week.

Smith told the Herald: "I see no reason why we shouldn't be pushing for a top-three spot.

"Hearts showed last season that Celtic and Rangers can be breached.

"We know what we are capable of and we know we can match Hearts, as we showed with our results and performances at Pittodrie and Tynecastle last season.

"I think we are a stronger squad and better prepared than last season."

Smith also hinted that he is keen to extend his stay at Pittodrie.

He said: "As things stand, I still have one year left [on my contract].

"I love the city of Aberdeen and I am playing for a great club."

Smith and the rest of the Dons squad will visit Soweto today after organising a collection to buy toys for under-privileged children in the area.

They play Jomo Cosmos for the second time on Wednesday.
