The Irishman suffered a collarbone injury during the League Cup final triumph over Inverness Caley Thistle on March 16 and was set to be out for up to six weeks.

But he could be set to make a shock return to the squad this Sunday for the semi against St Johnstone at Ibrox.

Aberdeen's management team would be delighted to see Hayes return, as he scored two of the Dons' four goals in their 4-0 League Cup semi-final victory over Sunday's opponents.

When asked whether he would be back by April 13th, assistant manager Tony Docherty said: "I can't comment on that at the moment but we are certainly hopeful he might.

"He is making a decent recovery. He won't be back for [Monday night's match against Hibernian] but he is coming on very well.

"He is certainly progressing better than we thought he would."
