RUSSELL Anderson is in line to play in the SPL season opener on Saturday against Hibs after battling through injury.

Contrary to knee-jerk reports from some well established news sources, the Dons captain was never ruled out of the fixture and should take up his usual slot in the centre of defence at Easter Road.

Dons gaffer Jimmy Calderwood has also confirmed that marauding full-back Richie Byrne has recovered from his groin injury.

Calderwood told reporters: "It looks as if Russell will make it and that is a massive boost for us.

"He trained with John Sharp yesterday and will join the rest of the group today.

"If there is no reaction then Russell will be in his usual place at Easter Road, which would give everyone a lift because he is now such an inspirational and influential character at the club.

"Richie should be fine as well, so I should have as strong a squad as possible for the opener, with only the suspended lads out.

"I couldn't ask for more and I'm now looking forward to what should be an exciting and interesting opening to our campaign."
