Calderwood Shoots Down Calderwood's Smith Claims

ABERDEEN boss Jimmy Calderwood was made to look like a fool yesterday thanks to two newspaper articles regarding Jamie Smith.

Aberdeen Journals' titles the Press & Journal and the Evening Express published contradicting stories concerning the likelihood of Dons winger Jamie Smith signing a new contract with the club.

In the morning, Calderwood was quoted in the P&J as saying: "As a manager in Scotland, losing a player to England is a worry. We had it with Kevin [McNaughton] last year and we have it again now with Jamie Smith."

However by the time the EE hit the streets, the story had changed and Jimmy said: "There have been absolutely no inquires from English clubs.

"At the moment there are no real fears that he could go down to England."

It seems that Aberdeen Journals have taken interviews with Jimmy Calderwood and manipulated them to ensure extra sales of both their daily newspapers.

Unfortunately it is Calderwood, Aberdeen FC and the Aberdeen-supporting public that come out looking stupid at the end of the day.

As it stands, Smith's agent Mark Donaghy is set to meet Aberdeen Legend and Director of Football Willie Miller today to start negotiating a contract, and he believes that Smith is keen to stay if a deal can be thrashed out.

Donaghy said: "He is keen to sit down and see what contract is on offer. He is happy with his life in the city and his wife and family are happy, too.

"If the contract is right for Jamie, they will have a good chance of re-signing him."

Be careful though, as this story may be spun a different way by lunchtime...
