And Calderwood told the Evening Express today that he may make another move for the 21-year-old who is out of contract at the end of the season.

He said: "We did try to sign Dean from Hibs and I thought there was a very good chance of him coming to us.

"Dean is a very good young player and we thought we had him until Hibs changed their minds.

"January is a long way off so we will have to see what his situation is then, but there will be other players in a similar position."

Northern Ireland international Shiels had an operation to remove his eye in February this year. He has been blind in his right eye since a domestic accident when he was eight years old.
