John 'Budgie' Stewart's 14th goal in 15 reserve games turned out to be a consolation as the second string lost out to Hibs at Montrose this afternoon.

Hibs got revenge for the 4-0 drubbing dished out by the rampant Dons reserves the last time the two teams met with a 3-2 win at Links Park.

Hibs went 1-0 up in the first half when the otherwise reliable Andy Considine was short with his passback to keeper Kelly allowing the Hibs forward to nip in and score at the second attempt.

Darren Mackie equalised from the penalty spot after a deflected shot from Budgie came back off the post and Andrew Bagshaw was fouled just as he was about to pull the trigger.

The second half saw Hibs create a two-goal cushion as Sandy Clark's team struggled defensively, before a good header from Budgie reduced the gap to 3-2.

It was too little too late for the young Dons, and they now look like finishing the season in a frustrating second place behind Celtic.

Hearts are also now only 1 point behind Aberdeen in the table after a crushing 6-1 victory over Dunfermline yesterday, but the Gorgie club have played two extra games.
