On/off, on/off, will he/won't he ... as Miller departed for Boro and Maguire for Killie, Jim Paterson and Steven MacLean squeezed through the transfer window just before it was bolted shut. A new striker always brings fresh hope and MacLean, misfiring at Plymouth, could yet find his level to become Aberdeen's first prolific goal-getter in eons.

He was reputedly also a target for Hearts - before Jim Jefferies' shock return. Cuffing the Jambos has been an AFC habit of late.
