The Red Avenger's Wednesday Rant - 21 January 2009

Last Orders?

First of all, damn Setanta and their Sunday kick-offs - if ever there was a result demanding a 12 hour celebratory binge drinking session, it was this one.

It was a fantastic blood-and-snotters game from start to finish, and for all Strachan's whinging about the ref's decisions (though strangely none about the stonewall penalty we were denied), by far the better team won.

It was one of those days when everything went right and Calderwood is due as much praise as his players.

The tactical decision to let Celtic knacker themselves out trying to equalise before two quick counter punches left them on the canvas was the finest use of rope-a-dope since Ali sent George Foreman out of boxing and into the grill business.

We were so good that even his strange 'get it right up ye' jibe about Dons fans having short memories was taken in our stride.

Though I would have thought us having the collective memory of a retarded goldfish would have been a good thing - I mean, does he really want us to remember our decent impression of relegation candidates in September and October?

Since then he's been less than subtle about his interest in the Utrecht job but as Pittodrie exits go, doing the double bubble against the Old Firm would be an entirely appropriate curtain call for a man who, despite his numerous faults, has taken our club from an almost Zimbabwean basket case back to where they should be.
