ABERDEEN

Something of a shock last week – the Dons didn’t make a deadline-day almost-got-our-fingers-
trapped-in-the-transfer-window signing.

The unexpected last-ditch signing has become... er... expected in recent years. On August 31 2005, we brought in Stevie Crawford; January 31 2006 — Ferne Snoyl; September 1 2006 — Lee Miller; August 31 2007 — Sone Aluko (loan); January 31 2008 — Alan Maybury; September 1 2008 — Sone Aluko (permanent); January 31 2009 — Javan Vidal... This summer — no-one.

Well, not quite no-one, but when the official website announced that AFC had re-signed Faroese teenager Gilli Sorensen on the afternoon deadline day, we feared the worst in terms of a marquee signing. And so it turned out to be true: one of Calderwood’s plus-points – the late signing flurry of activity – was gone forever.

With everyone at the club publicly pleading poverty, it looks like the excitement will have to happen on the pitch this season rather than in the transfer market.
