ABERDEEN

Even though there is still an arithmetical chance the Dons could get back into Europe it appears that even the club has written off our season. Last week saw half the squad being informed they were being released a month before the end of the season, Nicholson has announced he's going, with Miller expected to join him, and then on Monday Jackie McNamara announced his departure.

McNamara himself will not be missed, as although he was a player admired from afar by many Reds, when he signed no one at the club noticed the 'Best Before June 07' stamp on his boots. However his version of the events leading up to his sudden departure confirms the worst fears and concerns the fans have regarding Calderwood's tactical and man-management skills...Jackie thinks he has none, and having endured 20+ defensive partnerships in a season most Reds would agree.

But by far the most baffling departures are the release of highly rated youngsters like Ryan Strachan and Neil McVittie. Strachan was good enough to travel in the squad to Munich and Scotland U19's but it seems not rated good enough to take on the likes of St Mirren next year.

Given a grand total of two youngsters have been given a first team start under Calderwood, many Reds are asking why we bother with a youth set-up at all, if they're simply discarded without seeing any action. Meanwhile we're fielding the likes of Dave Bus and Stuart Duff...surely it's not because they are Aberdonian Aberdeen fans?

Alas we're lumbered with Calderwood and co for the foreseeable and we have no option but to trust his judgement as he attempts to rebuild the side.

But would it be too much to ask that our manager looks further afield than his usual sources of Dunfermline, whoever United have released that week and players his son has seen playing in the Dutch Amatuer Leagues?

The way things have started many Reds are of the opinion that the 'summer clearout' should begin in the Manager's office, taking in our revered Director of Football too - and that doesn't bode well for season ticket renewals.
