Aberdeen Given Grimmer Of Hope

ABERDEEN manager Mark McGhee believes there are positives to be taken from his side's 3-1 defeat at Rangers - particularly the second-half introduction of Scotland schoolboys captain Jack Grimmer.

The Dons showed some poor defending in going two goals down to the Champions-elect, but admirably fought back into the game thanks to a Darren Mackie goal and despite eventually losing 3-1 the Dons could have added to their tally.

But with the match deemed meaningless by Aberdeen's loss to Killie on Sunday, it became an opportunity to blood youngsters in the second half.

And 16-year-old Jack Grimmer became the youngest Aberdeen player to play in the SPL, beating Dons veteran Fraser Fyvie's record set earlier in the season.

With Fyvie and Paul Marshall also coming on, it was a young team that finished the match.

McGhee said: "It was a better performance although the result is not any better. There were positives but we lost 3-1 so we can't be too happy.

"It was disappointing how we lost the goals but those are things we can fix in time. I thought we might get something when we got the goal back and it was a well-worked goal. I thought we had a chance but it wasn't to be.

"We are not comfortable yet with a nine-point lead over Falkirk and that's something that has to be addressed.

"We have to get more daylight between us and them and our game against St Johnstone at the weekend is a more important game for us than this one."
