All To Play For In The Top Six

Jimmy Calderwood was delighted with Saturday's win over Hibernian that saw the Dons continue their improvement after over a decade of pain.

The win saw Aberdeen make the top six after the split; the first time they have managed to finish in the top half of the table for two seasons running in the last 12 years, and for only the third time since the SPL split was introduced at the turn of the millenium.

Jimmy told RedWeb: "Hibs are a good side so I'm obviously pleased that we won today and finish in the top six.

"To be honest we have been on a great run since the turn of the year.

"This time last season we were seven points behind Hibs and currently we are just four behind them so there is still plenty for us to play for in the remaining fixtures."

The remaining fixtures were decided soon after the final whistle yesterday, and see Aberdeen starting with a visit to Ibrox next Saturday. The Dons have not lost to Rangers this season, and if they beat them for a third time this campaign they get to keep them.

The Reds then have two crucuial home matches against UEFA Cup rivals Kilmarnock and Hibernian, and there will be plenty to play for with yesterday's result bringing the Dons to within four points of a potential European slot.

If Hearts finish third in the SPL and beat Gretna in the Scottish Cup final, then that will open the door for whoever finishes fourth to compete in next season's UEFA Cup.

Aberdeen will face the Gorgie club at Tynecastle for the fourth time this season on Wednesday May 3, after breaking their hoodoo there with a 2-1 win earlier this year.

On the final day of the season, the Dons will play Celtic at Pittodrie in what should be a cracker, with the Dons attempting to beat Gordon Strachan's SPL champions for the first time and perhaps going for that place in Europe.

Better than playing Livvy and Dunfermline again, eh?
