Big Dunc Slams Players

ABERDEEN legend Duncan Shearer believes Mark McGhee was let down by his Dons players.

The Pittodrie club are searching for a new manager after McGhee, along with assistant Scott Leitch and goalkeeping coach Colin Meldrum, departed on Wednesday following six straight defeats in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League including a record-breaking 9-0 loss away to Celtic.

Aberdeen are second bottom of the SPL table, above Hamilton Academical only on goal difference. Former Dons striker Shearer, who also had a spell as assistant boss at the club, was not surprised that McGhee had to pay the price for some shocking results but insists the players did little to help.

"Mark puts the team out there and they are all decent players," he told Northsound. "They should be getting better results than that.

"It is very difficult sometimes when you are on the touchline and your defenders are giving away penalties and your strikers are kicking the ball over the bar from three yards. It is very difficult for a manager to take that, you don't get the results and that's what happens.

"They are sitting second bottom of the league and had a couple of real bad results so I'm not surprised (that McGhee is away)."
