Council Gives Go-Ahead To Stadium Study

ABERDEEN councillors have today approved a study to look into building a community stadium in Aberdeen.

And they wish to look at the proposals at both King's Links and Loirston Loch.

The project planned for the site at Loirston Loch, backed by the Arena group, could cost about £53m and would include the mooted community stadium which would be a new home for Aberdeen FC.

The King's Links project is thought to contain a hotel, car parks, an innovative communications structure believed to include a new tramway, and 'Pittodrie Village', a modern living space with underground car parks and park areas.

Both plans are likely to feature a 22,000-seater stadium, potentially rising to 30,000, which fans are hoping will be christened 'The Northern Lights'.

Councillors discussed the stadium in a meeting today and decided to plough on with the £300,000 feasability study.

A motion by council leader Kate Dean for both sites to be explored was approved by colleagues. A report by council officers recommended Loirston.

If given approval, the stadium could be built by 2012, and may well be part of a Scottish bid for the 2016 European Championships.
