Maguire Puts Cash Before Country

English second-tier club Derby County, who finished 19th in that league this year escaping relegation to the English third division by seven points, are courting the out-of-contract Dons forward.

Maguire's priorities are so blinded either by greed or his agent's advice that he outrageously made a request to leave the Scotland camp yesterday to have a medical with England's 39th best club.

Quite rightly, Scotland manager Craig Levein turned down the Aberdeen attacker’s request, telling Maguire to put country before club.

And Maguire's current boss and Scotland manager between 1993 and 2001, Craig Brown, has repeatedly advised the striker to carefully consider his future international career when making decisions this summer.

If Maguire sees fit to ignore the advice of the highly-respected former national team boss and current Scotland manager in favour of short-term financial gain - as he seems to be doing - then it is a damning indictment of the player, agents and the current structure of football in the UK.

Scotland play Wales tonight in the Carling Nations Cup at the Aviva Stadium.
