MP Beggs Biased Beeb To Show Dons Game

AN ABERDEEN MP has written to the BBC with thousands of fans set to face a Dons TV blackout on Thursday.

Aberdeen South MP Anne Begg has pleaded with BBC Scotland to reverse their decision not to show Aberdeen's crucial Uefa Cup away game against Bayern Munich on Thursday.

Instead, Rangers' defeat game against Panathinaikos will be shown.

The BBC Strathclyde...sorry, BBC Scotland press office's excuse is that the channel has shown seven of Aberdeen's European games this season, and a mere four with Rangers and that isn't fair to the poor wee bears.

But considering that the BBC haven't had the broadcasting rights for the Champions League, which Rangers were 'competing' in before limping out pathetically, then they have actually shown every available Rangers fixture in Europe this season.

Outraged Aberdeen fans have bombarded the Beeb with complaints since last week, and a typically bandwagon-jumping local Aberdeen newspaper has cajoled around 500 readers to sign a pointless petition.

A spokesman for BBC Strathclyde's press office weasled: "In terms of television coverage these decisions are always difficult and affected by a number of factors..." Blah, blah, blah.

Now Aberdeen South MP Anne Begg has written to controller Ken MacQuarrie asking for a change of heart on Thursday's game.

And she has been joined by Lib Dem West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MSP Mike Rumbles in representing outraged constituents.

Mr Rumbles said: "We are all license fee payers in Scotland and people in North-east expect a certain level of service.

"And they rightly expect the BBC to cover this important match."

Last week's spectacular 2-2 draw against the might of Bayern Munich at Pittodrie was watched by half a million viewers on BBC Scotland, and many thousands more on BBCi.

MEANWHILE, the thousands of Dons supporters who will see the game in the Allianz Arena will converge on Aberdeen Airport over the next few days.

And the airport is asking those fans to make sure they know the latest security rules in force at the terminal

Over 5,000 Reds are expected to make the trip - including several direct charter flights heading for Germany between Tuesday and Thursday.

Any liquids passengers carry with them through security must be within containers no larger than 100mls, and sharp items - including Skean Dhus - must stored in check-in baggage as they cannot be carried through the security search area.

Airport managing director Kevin Brown said: "With a huge number of people coming and going at the same time, we want to make sure the Dons fans get the best possible start."
