FORMER Dons striker Mike Newell has officially revealed his interest in Aberdeen's departing defender Kevin McNaughton.

The Luton Town gaffer watched the 23-year-old Scotland international last week, and he admitted to seriously considering a contract offer for the out of contract star.

Newell said: "Whenever I am looking at a player, I like to go and see him in action for myself and make my own mind up, but he did well.

"At this stage, I don't know where Kevin wants to play his football next season, but he is a player I plan on following up my initial interest on."

Newell picked up the Dons' unsettled Finnish defensive midfielder Harkus Heikkinen in an identical situation last year.

Heikks has gone on to be a huge success at Kenilworth Road, receiving three awards at their end of season bash last week.

MEANWHILE, Aberdeen are reported to be closing in on Dundee keeper Derek Soutar after Ryan Esson played his last game at Pittodrie on Sunday.

The 27-year-old is wanted by Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood and cash-strapped Dundee are set to allow him to leave on a free.

It is understood that the Dons are set to take over his current contract, which has a year to run, and add a further year to it.
