Yesterday, Aberdeen FC announced that the centre block of the Richard Donald Upper will be the Red Army’s official singing section.

After a few fractious months, including the cancellation of a display and the setting up of an unofficial singing section in that area, fans representatives and the club have finally agreed to the section which should improve the match day atmosphere no end.

Aberdeen Mad regular and one of the people behind some of the club’s most memorable displays, Mezzanine, has spoken to us about the new singing section.

He said: “The club have announced RDU centre block as official singing section after talks with fans who have been attending the section. The club have been excellent to deal with and are fully supportive of what we are trying to achieve. It’s now up to the fans who want a decent atmosphere at home games to come up to RDU centre block and help make it happen.

“To the fans who sit elsewhere in the ground but agree there needs to be improvement, why not give the section a try for next season? There will always be an argument that it should be in section S or section X of South Stand, but having discussed every possible area we could have such an area with the club, RDU centre block is the only viable option to have a large group in one place without having to relocate current season ticket holders, or the potential for fans getting at each other’s throats.

“The feedback from the club, the manager and players is that the section has already made a huge difference and they really appreciate the backing. There have been a lot of people saying the noise will get lost, but fans in the Merkland and Section Y have commented on how loud it’s been at times.

“For the section to be a success we need as many fans as possible to get tickets for RDU centre block and if the section is a huge success next season then who knows where it will end up after that. But the only way to make it a success is for the fans to get right behind the section and fill it every home game.

“There will also be plenty of colour added along the way with flags, banners and displays.”

Discuss the singing section on our forum

An Aberdeen FC spokesman said: “There has been a clear appetite among fans for the singing section to continue in the RDU, where an unofficial singing section was created towards the end of last season.

“The club will hold further discussions with members of the singing section ahead of the new season kicking off in a bid to ensure we all work together to deliver an unrivalled atmosphere for Derek and the team.”

Anyone wishing to join the singing section next season can purchase a season ticket for this area for £356 during the Early Bird period from the Pittodrie ticket office, over the phone on 01224 63 1903 or online via www.afc.co.uk/eTickets.
