Aberdeen's top scorer Jamie Smith has had to withdraw from the Scotland squad. The squad was only announced this morning, with Russell Anderson named alongside Smith in Walter Smith's selection.

The player seemed to pick up a hamstring injury late in the game against Falkirk on Saturday. RedWeb states that he "could be out for some time", and if the injury turns out to be in the hamstring area that could mean 4-6 weeks.

Smith told RedWeb: "It's a bit of a bitter sweet feeling to be honest! It's obviously fantastic to know that I'm back in the thoughts of the Scotland manager but the injury has come at the wrong time for me both from a club and country perspective.

"I've enjoyed an injury-free time since returning to Scotland and it is very disappointing. We're in the middle of a pretty decent run at the moment and, on a personal level, I've been starting to find the net again. That said, injuries are part and parcel of the game and I'll be doing my best to get back just as soon as possible."

The 25-year-old has been one of the few successes at Pittodrie this term following his summer move from Den Haag, scoring eight times in 24 SPL outings.

He is a player Jimmy Calderwood rates highly and the Dons manager was delighted with the news last week that he wants to extend his stay at the club.

Calderwood told the Press & Journal last week: "Jamie came to me five or six weeks ago during the transfer window and asked about a new deal. I was very pleasantly surprised.

"He has brought his family to the area and he loves it here.

"He has the best years of his career ahead of him. And although he still has a lot to learn, it is refreshing to know he wants to stay here.

"The supporters have taken to him. We have had some talks with [Dons Legend and Director of Football] Willie Miller and we will see if we can do something."

Meanwhile, Zander Diamond has also been called up to the Scotland Under-21 squad.
