Top Six Chase Not Over

ABERDEEN gaffer Mark McGhee is still convinced the club is not quite doomed to a botton six finish this season.

The Dons ended an 11-match winless sequence to move within six points of sixth-placed Hearts with a game in hand.

McGhee said: "I don't know if there is a belief we can get into the top six but we know, mathematically, the door has not been closed on us today.

"We have the belief we can win next week after winning today and we will see where that takes us. It is still a long shot but we want to set out to win as many games as we can between now and the end of the season."

Zander Diamond and Sone Aluko were on target for the Reds with Steven Robb scoring a late consolation for the Buddies.

McGhee was pleased to end the club's poor run of form and claim their first win since January.

He said: "It is a weight off the shoulders because we have not been winning but not because of any record as that never entered my conscience.

"I wanted to win because I thought results elsewhere may have gone in our favour, which they did. Four games ago I thought Hearts would be lucky if they took one point but instead they have beaten Hibs last week, so they have more points than I thought they would have. The run that everyone was talking about wasn't bearing any weight with me."

The Aberdeen manager was, however, less than happy with referee Brian Winter's decision to show striker Steve MacLean a second yellow card.

He added: "He went to ground but I thought he got the ball. Before the player had even hit the ground the referee had his hand in his pocket. He seemed awfully enthusiastic about giving the red card and I was disappointed with that."
