Young Backs Tango

DONS midfielder Derek Young is backing former gaffer Jimmy Calderwood to help Kilmarnock out of their perilous SPL position.

Young's spectacular winner four minutes after the re-start illuminated an otherwise drab encounter as the new Kilmarnock boss returned to Pittodrie for the first time since his departure in May last year.

Young believes the man who signed him for Dunfermline before taking him to Aberdeen can steer the Ayrshire outfit away from a relegation battle in the Scottish Premier League.

He said: "I have no doubts Jimmy will get them out of the situation they are in. He has got them back playing already and it was a wee bit unfortunate it was against them that I scored. But I'm well pleased with it even if Jimmy is as sick as a dog.

"Jimmy has helped me out a lot in my career, taking me from Dunfermline and then to Aberdeen. After the game he just gave me a wee pat on the back and laughed."

Young is now hopeful the Dons can build on their 1-0 victory over Killie by defeating Hearts on Wednesday evening.

However the midfielder admits it will not be easy against the Tynecastle side who drew 1-1 with Rangers on Saturday.

He said: "They got a great result against Rangers. It is always tough down at Tynecastle.

"It is going to be a bit of a battle as that is what you get down there from kick-off right to the final whistle.

"Hopefully a bit of confidence from today is going to take us a long way there. We will go down there and battle.

"I thought we defended well against Kilmarnock and if we can do that down at Tynecastle then we hopefully we can get a decent result."

Kilmarnock boss Calderwood admitted another midweek match is the last thing he needs as he tries to get his ideas across to his new squad.

Calderwood, who received a standing ovation from the Aberdeen fans on his return to Pittodrie, will take charge of Killie for the fourth time when they travel to Hamilton on Tuesday evening.

But the former Dons boss says he would trade the chance to win much-needed points with some extra time on the training pitch.

He said: "I think we can take a lot of positives from the performance against Aberdeen but we have to start getting results quickly.

"It has been very difficult because of these midweek games. We have a game on Tuesday again so we can't do too much on the training park.

"We are starting to get our ideas across to the players. It isn't going to be easy but if the players keep playing and believing in it then hopefully we can get out of the situation we are in."

Calderwood said he is yet to decide who will replace Kevin Kyle as club captain.

The striker has given up the armband as he found it a hindrance, with David Fernandez skippering the side against Aberdeen.

Calderwood added: "We are just having a look at who will be captain at the moment.

"You need to get to know the players and then we will take it from there.

"It won't be Kyle this season. That was his own choice, to be honest."
