Zoltan VargaFORMER Dons star Zoltan Varga has died at the age of 65.

Varga collapsed on Friday evening while playing in a senior game in Budapest and could not be saved by medical staff, according to Hungarian News Agency MTI.

Hungarian international Varga was signed from Hertha Berlin for £40,000 by Jimmy Bonthrone in 1972.

Probably the most naturally gifted player to ever pull on a Red shirt, Varga stayed at Pittodrie for only a few months before moving to Ajax in 1973 to replace the legendary Johan Cruyff.

During his brief stay he thrilled and mesmerised the Dons support, as well as many bemused opposition players, on a number of occasions, and scored 15 goals in only 31 games for the Dons.

In his centenary history of Aberdeen FC, Jack Webster wrote of Varga: "If football were a wine, then here was the vintage champagne."

The thoughts of everyone at Aberdeen-Mad are with Zoltan Varga's family and friends.
