Aberdeen failed to get their faltering season back on track as they were held to a goalless draw by Inverness Caley.

The Dons' cause wasn't helped by the absence of striker Noel Whelan and Fernando Pasquinelli through suspension and injury, which forced Jimmy Calderwood to start with youngster John Stewart alongside Darren Mackie.

Recently appointed to Caley manager Craig Brewster was looking to extend the impressive start to his managerial tenure, which saw his side pick up draws against Hearts and Rangers and beat Motherwell. Not surprisingly the visitors named an unchanged starting 11.

Aberdeen twice came close in the opening five5 minutes. Firstly Richard Foster cut inside from the right but his fierce drive was deflected wide by Grant Munro.

From the resultant corner Zander Diamond rose above Darren Dods, only to see his powerful header crash back off the upright.

At the other end, Roy McBain's powerful run and cross into the area found no takers.

Aberdeen held the upper hand in the opening stages but all too often the final ball into the box was easily dealt with by the Caley Thistle centre backs.

With 15 minutes gone, Mark Brown was slow to come for a Foster cross which allowed Mackie to out jump him, but the ball drifted harmlessly over.

Aberdeen looked to have opened the scoring after 17 minutes when a Chris Clark corner was driven back across the six-yard box by Scott Severin - Markus Heikkinen looked to have got the vital touch, but Caley skipper Stuart Golabek was on hand to knock the ball off the line.

Caley forced their way up field and a Graham Bayne header from a Juanjo cross was saved under his cross bar by Ryan Esson.

The visitors passed up their best opportunity of the game after 34 minutes. Ross Tokely's deep cross evaded Diamond and Russell Anderson to allow McBain a free header at the far post, but the midfielder fluffed his lines and headed wide.

In the closing minutes of the first half Aberdeen again missed a great chance, Foster driving a Clark cross miles over the bar from a good position eight yards out.

After a very ordinary opening ten minutes to the second half, the visitors almost snatched an unlikely lead in a rare foray upfield. Tokely got on the end of a Munro cross, but Esson did well to hold down to his left.

This seemed to give Caley confidence to break forward and the home side had an amazing let off after 57 minutes.

Diamond was far too casual with his pass back and Juanjo was on to it like a flash, but the Dons keeper raced from his line to block the diminutive striker and Kevin McNaughton was on hand to clear the danger.

With 60 minutes gone a low 20-yard effort from Severin flew just past the right-hand post with Brown beaten.

After 73 minutes Tokely played the ball into Bayne, who brilliantly turned Russell Anderson before driving in on goal. Dons keeper Esson again saved his side as he charged down the striker's effort before reacting to block Juanjo's shot from the rebound.

At the other end, Foster slung the ball into the area finding Stewart, who for once got away from his marker, but with the goal at his mercy his shot was woefully off target.

Following a corner kick the visitors' Munro, who had stayed up field, met a cross from Liam Keogh which was comfortably held by Esson and the match finished goalless.
