Aberdeen 1 Dundee 1

In a desperately disappointing Pittodrie encounter it was honours even with neither side doing enough to claim all three points.

The visitors will be the happier of the two camps as they were reduced to ten men midway through the second half when Mark Fotheringham was red-carded for a second bookable offence.

For the home side the harsh reality is that they are not converting chances into goals. As in the past two home games they created enough opportunities to win the match, but didn't have an on-form striker to put the ball in the net.

Aberdeen came into this match against visitors Dundee looking to record their first home win over their East Coast rivals since Willie Miller was manager back in 1993.

Dundee were buoyed by the re-signing of forgotten man Fabian Caballero in midweek. The Argentinian finding a place on the bench and with Steve Lovell returning from suspension, Dundee were approaching full strength.

Aberdeen got off to the worst possible start as they conceded a goal in the first minute, Russell Andersons speculative shot from 14 yards was spilled by David Preece for John Sutton to follow up and nod the ball home.

Dons skipper Anderson thought he had brought his side level in five minutes when his header from a Derek Adams cross crashed off the upright.

With 18 minutes gone Aberdeen almost scored a bizarre second goal, Kevin McNaughton played an awful pass-back which sailed past his keeper, but thankfully for the home side the ball went the wrong side of the post.

Sutton was proving a handful for the Aberdeen defence and he was again prominent when he broke away from Phil McGuire, but Anderson was on hand to charge down the big striker's effort.

The visitors had a major let-off in the 34th minute when Anderson's header from another Adams cross found Steven Craig, he swivelled and his shot rebounded off the crossbar and away to safety.

Aberdeen finally drew level three minutes before the interval, a long Kevin McNaughton free kick caused panic in the Dundee rearguard, the ball breaking to Markus Heikkinen who drove home a low eight-yard effort beyond the despairing Derek Soutar.

Scott Severin came close to opening his account for the Dons when he neatly sidestepped Stephen McNally before flashing a left-foot drive from 16 yards just wide of the post.

With 60 minutes gone Aberdeen again went close as Heikkinen got free of his marker inside of the area, but his fierce shot from the angle flashed just wide of the upright.

Dundee's cause wasn't helped in 72 minutes when Fotheringham was sent off for an ugly lunge at Heikkinen which caught the Dons midfielder very late.

Aberdeen went close again minutes later when Anderson headed an Adams corner inches wide.

Sub Fernando Pasquinelli almost made an immediate impact after replacing Michael Hart in 75 minutes heading an excellent Steven Tosh cross just wide of target when it looked easier to score.

Right at the death McGuire was just off target for the home side as he failed to keep on target an effort from McNaughton's cross.
