It didn't turn out to be quite the beginning he had hoped for, but new United manager Craig Brewster would have been delighted at his side's second-half response in a game in which the Tangerines could have and should have won.

Despite the pre-match hype, there wasn't too much for the fans to shout about in a surprisingly tense, opening first half apart from Richie Byrne's header which narrowly flew past for the visitors after a needless foul from Alan Archibald.

As Brewster bobbed in and out of the dugout trying to orchestrate his troops, he would have noted there was a complete lack of pace

It took them 24 minutes to create their first chance and it looked as if they had a strong penalty claim.

Charles Mulgrew's long free-kick was dropped by Jamie Langfield as he flew out to the edge of his box. As the ball pinged around, the keeper clearly held the Spaniard to the ground but the referee appeared not to see it among the crowd.

Riding their luck, the visitors broke to the other end but Richard Foster, who looked out of sorts, woefully missed when it seemed easier to score.

Darren Mackie's superb run on the right flank deserved more than a slack left-footed volley from 10 yards with the goal gaping.

The game was crying out for a goal and it came three minutes into the second period with an edge of box strike from Mackie.

Byren's cross was chested down by Stevie Crawford into the path of the striker who, taking advantage of slack marking from Archibald and David McCracken, recoiled and bulleted it low into the corner.

But the Dons' joy turned to despair four minutes later when United equalised.

A Grant Brebner free-kick out on the right wing was headed on by McIntyre in a crowd for Archibald to make amends and volley the ball home from the six-yard line.

The chances were now being created in front of Langfield and both Mulgrew and Brebner both came close hitting the side-netting with shots which beat the keeper.

While Aberdeen were very much on the back foot their defenders were rock solid and Tangerines had to settle for a share of the points.
