Aberdeen 6/5 to beat St Johnstone

Last updated : 09 April 2010 By Paddy Power

8th plays 7th in the SPL as Aberdeen take on St Johnstone on Sunday and The Dons will be desperate to improve on their dreadful recent run of just one win in the last 14 games. Manager Mark McGhee will take some heart from some of the performances against Champions-elect Rangers last week when they dragged them selves back into the game but he knows it is against those teams around them that they must start to play. Three more points in the bag at Pittodrie come 2pm on Sunday will be a good start and they’re marginal favourites to do exactly that – 6/5 to win with the draw 9/4

Darren Mackie bagged the goal that put Aberdeen back in it at Ibrox – he’d missed a glorious chance to pull one back minutes earlier so pleasing that he got his head back up to slide in and score. Both himself and on-loan striker Steven Maclean are the favourites to break the deadlock and score the first goal – back them at 13/2 – although Sone Aluko who scored a vital goal in the last win against St Mirren is marginally outside that at 7/1, along with Charlie Mulgrew and Michael Paton. An outside bet on Italian defender Davide Grassi notching first would pay big dividends – he’s a tasty 40/1. You may not actually mind who scores the goals as long as they’re in the right end but a flutter on first scorer adds a bit of excitement to those goalmouth scrambles….

Goals haven’t been easy to come by for this Aberdeen side, just 30 all season, but maybe with SPL survival in sight, this could be the day they turn it on and deliver the goods for the Pittodrie fans. The biggest win of the season is 3-0 (twice – against Hearts and Hamilton) and a third one of those would be welcome to settle the nerves – given the goal-shy nature of the team, the odds on this are favourable – 20/1 and an healthy £210 return when you bet a tenner. Alternatively a closer affair, like the narrow 2-1 victory over St Johnstone back in November, is a 15/2 shot. Either way, pray for goals and pray that Jamie Langfield has a quiet afternoon
