Langfield Signs Pre-Contract Agreement

Aberdeen have this afternoon completed the signing of Dunfermline 'keeper Jamie Langfield on a three-year pre-contract agreement. Jimmy Calderwood was clearly impressed with Langfield's display of aggression during the reserve fixture between the sides, with the signing coming a week after the Dons boss slated Aberdonian for being too soft. The Pars stopper was sent off for a verbal volley aimed at the referee.

Jimmy told the Evening Express: "I am delighted to have signed Jamie for three years. He had a few options open to him where a first team spot was guaranteed. Obviously that is not the case at Aberdeen because we have David Preece and Ryan Esson. But Jamie chose to take on the challenge and join Aberdeen.

"That is the great thing about this club, I cannot remember a player I have went for who did not want to join. Players want to come here if we can afford them."

"I have watched Jamie a few times in reserve matches and he performed very well. His standard has been very high although he was sent off against us earlier this week. If anything that probably just shows his will to win. Jamie has a physical presence and has played for the Scotland Under-21 team and I think he has the potential to go far. He is a strong keeper."

Calderwood initially signed Langfield for Dunfermline a year ago, and, in a manoeuvre that virtually mirrors Richie Byrne's transfer, Calderwood has brought his summer signing to Aberdeen in an attempt to kick-start his career after a season on Dunfermline's bench.
