Smith Misses Semi

ABERDEEN playmaker Jamie Smith has had yet another injury setback - this time caused by a freak miskick of the ball in training.

Smith will miss the CIS Insurance Cup semi-final against Dundee United tonight, but he had been set to play after recovering from the hamstring pull which forced him off in the recent game against Hearts.

The former Den Haag player would have missed the last-four showdown with United if the game had gone ahead as scheduled last Tuesday and not been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Tynecastle.

In fact, Aberdeen would have been missing a number of players if the tie was played on its original date, but thanks to Hearts being unable to provide a playable pitch last week every member of Aberdeen's first-team squad with the exception of Smith and Richie Byrne is now fully fit.

Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood was disappointed to be missing his most influential player, but still managed to squeeze a couple of annoying Jimmyisms into his pre-match interviews.

He said: "Jamie was crossing balls in for fun, then they started coming in from the other side and he went to finish one but miskicked the ball.

"He felt something in his hamstring again and with all the games we have coming up, we can't take any chances.

"Despite the late blow of losing Jamie Smith we are all looking forward to the match and we have more players available this Tuesday than we would have had last week.

"People are telling us we have an advantage because Robson has moved to Celtic but the fact we are missing Jamie tends to even that up.

"As big Lee Wilkie said in the papers last week United are out to prove they are no one man team."

The Dons still have tickets remaining for tonight's CIS Insurance Cup semi-final at Tynecastle. Aberdeen ticket office will be selling tickets today between 9am and 5pm, at £22, £18 and £5.

Tickets will also be on sale before the match from 6pm. Aberdeen supporters should purchase tickets from the ticket office booth behind the Wheatfield Stand.
