Braziliant?

I must admit to being slightly confused at the news yesterday that Aberdeen have taken on Brazilian trialist Moreira Herivelto. Why confused? Because the former Ionikis and Walsall player is a striker. This is a position that the Dons seem to have well covered this season, with Mackie, Whelan, Pasquinelli, Craig, Adams and Stewart all chipping in with goals and good performances.

Jimmy Calderwood said yesterday, "he first came to my attention when Dunfermline played Walsall in a friendly a couple of years ago. Herivelto was outstanding. Like most Brazilians, he has great technique and is very fast. I know his agent very well. When he told me the lad was willing to come to Scotland on trial I grabbed the opportunity. He will train with the first team for the first time tomorrow and it is planned that he will spend a week to 10 days with us."

The Brazilian, nicknamed "Harry", arrived at Pittodrie on Monday and will join the senior squad for training from today. It is hoped he will stay for a week or so to let Jimmy have a good look at him. Because Herivelto is a free agent there would be no need to wait until the January window reopens if the Dons were to make a move to sign him. But do we need to sign him? It seems to me that Aberdeen are in more pressing need of midfield cover and specifically a playmaker in the Jess mould. It is not yet known whether Harry can fill this role, but Jimmy hasn't made a bad move yet...so I'll trust his judgement.
